ECHOS 2020
The sound installation “ECHOS” consists of 21 old radios, each playing the national anthem of a country that no longer exists.
These 21 nations emerged and disappeared between 1900 and 2000, shaped by geopolitical shifts, wars, and border changes. The selection focuses on states that were founded within clearly defined borders—borders that have since vanished.
The installation unfolds in several phases: each radio plays the anthem of a lost nation, offering a moment of remembrance and reflection on impermanence. But in the final phase, all anthems play simultaneously, creating a chaotic soundscape where identities merge and boundaries dissolve.
“ECHOS” serves as a reminder that nothing lasts forever. Borders are lines on paper, nations human constructs, destined to disappear—just like their anthems.
